A message from our Deputy Primary Principal
A battle of the mind!
An aim of education is to engage and enhance the minds of students. Across every institution of education, the mind needs to be engaged for academic vigour to be achieved. In my class, I regularly seek to get students thinking, sharing their thoughts and challenging assumptions.
One of the IB Learner Profiles is ‘Open-minded’- ‘we seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience’.
The mind is a battlefield. Quotes about the mind are one of those things you’ll find regularly on social media, from academics or historical figures. Marcus Aurelius: “You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realise this and you’ll find strength”.
Well, with respect to Aurelius, there are some outside events or forces that do affect the mind. Two of those things that are deeply impacted are the soul or spirit and the body (flesh).
Paul, reflects on these things regularly in his writing.
Romans 8:5-6.
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
We want our students, our children to have their minds set on what the spirit desires - our fleshly desires should be left behind. But, it’s a battle. The fleshly or worldly desires push against minds, and sometimes they win.
HOPE ideally creates a place where students’ minds are challenged. We present problems, new information and challenges. We discuss different viewpoints. But our aim is to have students agree with and adhere to what the Spirit desires. That the desires of students at HOPE are in tune to what Christ desires for their lives.
Here’s some examples of what’s happening at HOPE to enable Christ’s desires to be students desires: amazing student/teacher relationships both in the classroom and out in the playground, assemblies, teacher instruction through a Christian perspective, Christian living lessons, morning devotions in pastoral care classes, sports coaches aiming to point students to playing in a way that honours Christ, worship team, the prayer room and service opportunities within the school.
The battle for the mind resumes. Speaking to some older friends, it appears to not stop throughout the life. Let’s model together to students how to persevere in bringing our minds captive to Christ.

Cross Country Postponed
The Cross Country has been postponed due to the condition of the running course. The event will be the morning of the 22nd of November. Wear your house colours and running shoes (and be prepared to get a little muddy).
This means that the HOPE Cross Country won't be used as a selection event for the inter-school cross country. If you would like to nominate yourself for the inter-school cross country race (morning of the 30th of November) please email Mrs Kime: rebecca.kime@hope.edu.kh
The age groups and distances for the ISSAPP Cross Country are: Y4-5: 1.5km, Y6-8: 3km and Y9-12: 4.5km
Thursday 14th November we are running TUESDAY timetable
Please remind your child to bring their PE gear on that day if they usually have a PE class on a Tuesday.
Visiting WEC Camera Team
On Tuesday 5th November, a camera team will be coming in to film various aspects of HOPE International School. They are here with WEC and will be filming the work and ministries of Mrs Gaby Ek and Mr Thomas Ashmead (both are associated with WEC while working here at HOPE).
The team will be filming across the school in order to capture the vibrant and warm atmosphere found on the Phnom Penh campus. These will be general shots of the school and the team will take care not to focus on any individual student. They will be on site from 1:30pm. The footage will be used by WEC and be available for HOPE.
HEAD LICE
As there have been children in Primary School with head lice, we ask you to please take the time to check your child's head and all household members for head lice and nits (head lice eggs).
If you find head lice, it is important that you begin treatment prior to your child coming to school. Please begin treatment as soon as possible. Children can come back to school as soon as an effective treatment has been carried out and confirmation obtained from parents.
To minimize the spread of head lice in school, we are asking for your support in helping to control the problem. An early check and prompt treatment will help to stop the spread.
A letter has been sent out to parents yesterday and you can refer to it for tips you may follow to prevent head lice from spreading.
Your cooperation is an important part of the efforts being made to completely control the spread of head lice in school.
Thank you!
